Weymouth will
host the 2012 Olympic sailing events, a considerable opportunity
to secure funding and to raise the profile of this archetypal English
seaside resort.
Some years ago we produced a Design Guide to the listed Georgian
and Victorian terraces along the Esplanade, for the Council and
English Heritage.
Now it was felt that the character and quality of the promenade
itself needed addressing, in particular the poor quality facilities,
planters and un-coordinated street furniture.
Tibbalds worked closely
with Watkins:Dally to prepare a Design Guide for the promenade and
associated structures. This provided a formal character assessment
and set out the design principles and justification for the location
and form of new buildings and landscape structures that could be
both contemporary and sympathetic to the historic character of the
Esplanade. |
