Design Codes Research and Practice Guide

Client - DCLG and CABE

Design codes have been a controversial topic in the architectural and planning press. The government and CABE wished to explore the potential for using them in the new planning system, with the aim of improving the quality and speed of major new housing proposals and reducing the conflict around them.

Together with University College London (UCL), we were commissioned to carry out research over a three-year period, based on 19 case studies, some of which were already built, some being tracked from the earliest stages. The UCL case studies included several schemes that Tibbalds has been involved in, including Lightmoor and West Silvertown (with Gardner Stewart Architects).

The research findings were published and we then distilled them into “Preparing Design Codes: A Practice Manual”, published to accompany PPS3.
