Central Margate Strategic Urban Design Framework

Margate is a seaside resort that has suffered long-term decline as visitor numbers have dropped. Following the partial closure of the Dreamland Fun Park, we were appointed to lead a specialist team to formulate a regeneration strategy for central Margate.

The availability of several large redevelopment sites offered a unique opportunity for significant urban restructuring.

The strategic urban design framework set out principles for physical regeneration, based on a detailed analysis of the characteristics of the existing place. From this analysis, we identified development opportunities and issues needing to be addressed, in particular pedestrian and vehicular movement.

The strategic framework focused on resolving these issues in a revised movement strategy reinforced by new buildings, streetscape and uses.

The framework document also illustrated the quality of environment that could be achieved.
