Wednesbury Town Centre Development Framework

Client - Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council

On the sloping site of a derelict 1960s shopping centre, Sandwell Council was promoting the development of a large supermarket. The scheme aimed to revitalise the town centre, by ‘anchoring’ its high street shopping and improving facilities for buses and trams.

Tibbalds was asked to identify urban design principles to support these regeneration aims. We proposed integrating the site into the town centre through a network of streets and public spaces defined by buildings with active frontages. A series of urban design objectives and options allowed priorities to be discussed. We then designed a development framework for the site, with illustrations to show how it could be realised to create a lively, attractive mixed-use place.

The development framework was used to guide pre-application negotiations with supermarket operators and landowners.
