Lessons from the forefront of design coding

Design codes and design guides have been part of urban design practice since the late 1980s. Mainly used for large-scale new developments until recently, research has confirmed that design codes raise design quality. National planning policy and successive government pilot and pathfinder programmes have reinforced their place in the system over time.
